Description
The Boulder
A rounded table lamp with a flat-cut top, turned from a single block of Egyptian alabaster and set on a ridged wooden base. The form is smooth and even, tapering slightly towards the foot. Unlit it reads as a pale cream stone. Lit, it looks as if something warm is inside it.
The stone is calcite, a banded travertine laid down in layers by water moving through limestone caves, and the wall is thin enough here for light to get through. The whole thing goes amber. Rings and bands you could not see in daylight come up through the surface, tightest around the lower part of the body.
The stone
The body is carved from a single piece of stone, not cast and not moulded. It sits on a turned wooden base with ridges cut around it, made separately and fitted to the stone. The rock is soft enough, about 3 on the Mohs scale, to work with hand tools, though harder than the gypsum the word alabaster technically refers to. Because each block is different, each Boulder is different. Yours will not match the photo. The veining may be sparser, or the colour a shade greyer. That is the material, not a defect.

Where it comes from
Luxor, in Upper Egypt. Most of the workshops cutting Egyptian alabaster sit on the west bank of the Nile, close to the tombs this stone was originally quarried for. The stone has been quarried in Egypt since antiquity, from sites in the region around Luxor and in Middle Egypt, among them Hatnub, Wadi Gerrawi and Wadi el-Assiuti, several of which were worked as far back as the Predynastic period. Somebody in one of those workshops carved this.
We keep stock in Amsterdam and post from there. Nothing travels from Egypt when you order, so delivery takes days, not weeks, and there is no customs charge inside the EU.
Care
Alabaster is a soft natural stone. Dust it with a soft, dry cloth, and keep it away from water, cleaning products and long periods of direct sunlight. It is solid, but it can chip or crack if it is knocked or dropped, so lift it with both hands and set it down gently.
Every piece is cut from natural stone, so its colour, banding and translucency are its own and will differ from the photographs. That is the character of the material, not a flaw.

We ship from our own stock in Amsterdam to the Netherlands and the rest of the EU. Delivery in the Netherlands is free on orders of €55 or more and €6.95 below that; to other EU countries it is €12.95. Orders within the EU pay no customs or import charges.
You have 30 days from delivery to tell us you want to return a piece. If it arrives damaged, email us a photo within 14 days and we will replace it or refund you in full.
