Description

The Vessel

An open cup, hollowed out of one block of Egyptian alabaster. Put a candle in it and the wall lights up from inside. That is the whole idea. The stone is calcite, laid down in layers by water moving through limestone caves, so it comes with horizontal bands running through it, and with the walls carved this thin the flame picks every one of them out. Unlit it is a pale cream cylinder. Lit, it goes amber and you can see where the layers were.

Two sizes, a small and a medium. Both take a standard tealight. Neither is a copy of the other. Colour, veining and how much light gets through all change from block to block, and the one on your table will not be the one in the photograph.

The carver works with hand tools. The stone sits at about 3 on the Mohs scale, soft enough to cut but harder than the gypsum that the word alabaster usually refers to. Nothing here is cast or moulded. There are no joins.

  • Care: a soft dry cloth. Keep it away from standing water and from anything acidic or abrasive, which will etch the surface.

Where it comes from

Luxor, in Upper Egypt. Most of the workshops are on the west bank of the Nile, close to the tombs this stone was first quarried for, and the blocks come out of the region Egypt has taken alabaster from since antiquity.

We keep stock in Amsterdam and post from there. Your alabaster candle holder does not travel from Egypt to reach you. Inside the EU that means days rather than weeks, and no customs bill at the door.
